WORLDWIDE SCIENTISTS NAMED MORINGA AS "THE MIRACLE TREE"

The Moringa genus is the only member of the Moringaceae family, and it encompasses a wide range of plants, including flowering herbs and trees. The best known species within the genus is Moringa oleifera, commonly known as Horseradish tree,MOTHER'S BEST FRIEND, Benzolive, Kelor or Drumstick tree; the latter name is because of the drumstick-like shape of the long, curved seed pods characteristic of this species. This tree is native to the area surrounding the Himalayas in subcontinent but can grow anywhere in tropical and semi-arid climates. It grows to about ten meters in height and produces leaves and pods even when water supplies are scarce, allowing it to thrive in arid climates where few other plants can survive. Best known for its exceptional usefulness as a food and medicinal plant, nearly every part of Moringa oleifera can be used in one way or another to benefit humans and provide food and other valuable materials for farming and fuel needs.

The moringa tree project is a sustainable approach to combating poverty, malnutrition and environmental degradation in Kenya. This nutrient-rich "miracle" tree, grown by the local village Environmental Youth Action Corps' (EYAC), provides social enterprise opportunities for rural women's cooperatives. The sale of the fruit, leaves, and pods - for food, cooking oil, cattle feed, and bio-fuel - fosters economic development and generates income for rural villagers.
Moringa trees are rich in vitamins A, C, calcium, iron & potassium; higher in protein than soybean meal; drought resistant, add nitrogen to soil; anti-bacterial; used for household water purification; a source of edible oil, bio fuel & cattle feed. Trees purchased fund education for EYAC members. Planted at orphanages & schools, the trees provide a sustainable solution for malnutrition. Training women in business and product development will provide empowering income-generating opportunities.
By providing adequate nutrition for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, children will realize their full intellectual and physical potential. Womens' groups will attain valuable entrepreneurial skills enabling them to provide for their families and ensure a better future for their children. Through the EYAC, youth complete their education and learn practical life skills in the nurseries. Educating, assisting and empowering locals fosters development at the grassroots level.

MORINGA IS WIDELY CULTIVATED IN PUNJAB AND SINDH PROVINCE IN PAKISTAN.

Japanese NGO Nippon International Cooperation for Community Development (NICCO) is investing in the development of District Mazafargarh by promoting highly values crop among small farming community to alleviate poverty as most of farming community was having less than one acre of land and living in extreme poverty. This was stated by NGO country representative Juri Murakami while talking to University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan at a meeting at VC Chamber on Thursday. She said that her organization started functioning in Pakistan two years ago after flood-hit. She said that at the outset, they started the rescue work and rehabilitation to the flood hit districts to bring normalcy to the lives of flood-hit people spending miserable days and nights in the floods. In the second phase of project, she said that they had begun the development of the areas by investing in giving awareness to the masses besides providing fertilizer and other implements aimed at increasing the income of the locals with the help of modern trends. She said that initially, they were focusing on Moringa, lemon grass and other crops to earn the heavy foreign exchange for the locals as well as for the country.

They discussed the avenue of collaboration to work together for the noble cause. Institute of Horticulture Director Amjad Aulak and other notable scientists from the university were also present on the occasion who gave their suggestion to promote the productivity and increase the per acre production of the area. UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that it was matter of grave concerns that in Multan and Muzarfargarh , the wastage of fertilizer by dumping to the fields (over dozing) was largest across the country. He stressed the need to curb the trends by giving awareness to the masses so that they can save heavy money with the use of balanced fertilizer. He said that the with the help of Turkey, the UAF is conducting a survey of extremely low income people to provide 500 best breed goats to hundreds families in the district Faisalabad. He said that at the times of floods, university provided best seed to the farmers of Athari Hazari, Jhang, in order to cultivate the crops in the flood hit area as rescue in rehabilitation process. Besides, the university also provided them with agricultural inputs and
implements. The campus community also gave the school bags to the people.

would redress the grievances of the farming community
